Fort Roupel, Greece

Located at the very begining of the Greek section of EuroVelo 13 in Greece, Fort Roupel is a Greek fortress which has been built in 1914. Because of its location at the Bulgarian – Greek border, this fort has been included in the 1930s in the Metaxas Line, the Greek line of defense. This choice has proven judicious since it contributed to stop the German-Bulgarian invasion of Greece in 1941. After World War Two fort Roupel remained of crucial importance as a part of the Iron Curtain between West and East, between Greece and Bulgaria. Nowadays, the army organises guided tours in the fortress.
