Croatia’s northern border with Hungary is one of the lesser known corners of this fascinating country. The route takes cyclists through picturesque villages surrounded by pristine forests and nice cities, among which stands out Koprivnica, often called the cycling capital of Croatia due to the largest share of bicycles per capita in Croatia. Most of the route passes through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube, known also as ‘Amazon of Europe’, because Drava stands out as one of the few major European rivers with preserved original course. Along the way, many watch towers and border stones will remind cyclists that they are following a border which used to form part of the Iron Curtain.
